This was the first trip of the year for me and boy did i have a lot of new gear to test. We defiantly picked the best weekend to go, the weather was in the 60's all the way out there and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. That was also a first for the year beautiful weather. Once we left Burlington and started heading towards Sedro-Wolly we were going into new territory for both myself and John. Once we were out past Baker lake Rd. neither of us had seen these mountains before, and of course that's where id want to got backpacking. I mean come on whats the fun in doing the norm?
So we did we headed out Rt. 20 all the way north threw Concret and towards Ross lake. Once we got out to our trail head we were in aw in the wonderful views that we had. I probably almost wrecked the car 20 times from just staring up at the peaks. By far the most beautiful woods I've ever been in.
The hike started out with a little confusion as to wear the trail head was, we got out bearings right and took off. Now on the map it doesn't seem like there's much of a climb on the trail, yep that was wrong we hiked 2 miles straight up. Climbing about 1,500 ft in those 2 miles and we didn't even make it to our final destination witch was another 1,000 ft up. Once we started hiking we noticed very quickly that there was still snow high up in the mountains, and well we were high up. There was about 2 1/2 ft of pack snow and ice all over the mountain and we were stuck. We ended up making camp right along side of the trail because if we were to keep going 1 we would lose the trail and 2 had no idea how much deeper the snow would get and with john not having the proper gear and neither of us having snow shoes moving forward was impossible for either of us. So now it was time to set camp up no problems there everything we had worked and we new we were good. But there was one problem, fire. We couldn't get one going because of all the snow, the wood even hanging in the trees was soaking wet. So it was off the bed at sunset for both of us.
The next morning we woke up and broke camp by 10 and were back on the road exploring a little more north on Rt. 20. All in all this trip was amazing and I had a total blast and would strongly suggest to anyone with little or major backpacking experience that this place is one of the best to be hiking in.
